Overview
The Fairmont Hotel San Francisco, built in 1907 and a member of Historic Hotels of America® since 2001 was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation® for recognizing and celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. Celebrated architect Julia Morgan designed the Beaux-Arts-style Fairmont Hotel and was preparing for its grand opening when San Francisco suffered a devastating earthquake on April 18, 1906. The hotel survived and one year later opened its doors to celebrate the re-birth of this great city. From its setting atop Nob Hill, the hotel enjoys spectacular city views and a long history in the spotlight. It was here in 1945 that delegates met to draft the United Nations Charter. Every president since William Taft has been a guest, and in the ornate Venetian Room, Tony Bennett first sang his signature tune, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
